What Is a Cake Smash Session? Who Is It For?

A cake smash session is a fun, playful way to celebrate your baby’s first birthday. It’s all about capturing those priceless moments as your little one explores, tastes, and joyfully smashes their very own birthday cake. From the curious pokes to the big, messy laughs, these photos create lasting memories of this special milestone.

Cake smashes are perfect for babies who are ready to sit up on their own and are curious about new textures and tastes — usually around their first birthday. It’s a joyful, candid celebration that reflects your baby’s personality and the excitement of turning one.

How to Prepare for Your Baby’s Cake Smash Session

A cake smash session is one of the most fun and joy-filled milestones to capture — frosting-covered fingers, big belly laughs, and all the sweet chaos that comes with it. But a little preparation goes a long way in making sure things run smoothly. Here are a few tips to help you get the most out of your session!

1. Your Session, Your Style

I offer milestone and cake smash sessions in two styles — so you can choose what fits your family best.

You can book:

An outdoor session at a beautiful natural location with props

Or an in-home session using my mobile studio setup, which includes a white backdrop and lighting to create a clean, studio-style look right in your living room or nursery space (I’ll need about a 6x8 ft area cleared for setup!)

Wherever we shoot, my goal is to help your vision come to life — whether that’s soft and natural, bright and colorful, or styled to match your baby’s birthday theme.

2. Timing is Everything

If you’re hoping to use the photos for birthday invitations, party décor, or display prints at the party, I recommend scheduling your session when your little one is about 10½ to 11 months old. This gives us enough time for editing and for you to order any products you'd like in hand before the celebration.

3. Don’t Forget the Cake and Props

Clients are responsible for bringing the cake and any props or decorations they want included in the photos. This allows you to fully customize the look and match your baby’s birthday theme or personal style. From banners to balloon garlands to personalized cake toppers — feel free to bring anything you’d love to see in the final images!

4. Cake Smashing Hacks (a.k.a. The Snack Trick)

Babies are unpredictable — and sometimes, they're just not that into frosting. That’s where puffs or small snacks come in handy! We can gently tuck them into the back of the cake to encourage your little one to explore.

5. Cake Tips for the Best Photos

Not all cakes photograph equally!

  • Skip the chocolate — trust me on this one. It won't look great on camera (think: 💩).
  • If you’re picking up your cake the day before, let it sit out for a few hours before the session so the icing softens. A cold, firm cake can be tough for baby to smash and less fun to interact with.

6. Be Ready to Get Involved

Some babies dive right in. Others need a little encouragement. Don’t be surprised if you need to get your hands messy too — helping them touch the cake or showing them how to dig in is totally normal!

And since a lot of little ones are also on the move at this age, I may need a little help keeping them in front of the camera! Be ready to gently guide them back into position or help redirect their attention as needed.

7. Prepare for a Mess

Cake smash sessions are messy — in the best way! Be sure to bring:

  • An extra outfit for baby
  • Wipes and a bag for messy clothes

Final Thoughts

Cake smashes are such a special way to celebrate your baby’s first year. With just a bit of planning, we’ll create memories you’ll treasure forever. If you have any questions before your session, I’m just an email or text away — and I can’t wait to capture these photos of your little one!
