Christmas Focused on the Memories
As I look at our tree this year, I’m flooded with reminders of years past. The handmade ornaments, the photo frames tucked among the branches, and the ornaments passed down from grandparents all tell a story. Each one holds a memory—of little hands creating something imperfect and beautiful, of loved ones who came before us, and of seasons we’ll always carry with us. It’s a gentle reminder that the most meaningful gifts aren’t the ones with the highest price tags, but the ones filled with love and memory.
In recent years, I’ve lost several loved ones, and the holidays have a way of bringing that absence into sharper focus. Traditions are different. Certain songs feel heavier. And sometimes, joy and grief sit side by side — quietly, but unmistakably.
As a mom, I also feel the weight of time in a different way this season. The days with our children can feel so long — the messes, the noise, the endless to-do lists — and yet somehow, we blink and wonder how they’re already this old. One day you’re rocking them to sleep, and the next you’re packing lunches or watching them head off to school. Time is both slow and impossibly fast. That’s what makes memories so sacred.
The Most Thoughtful Gifts Are the Ones That Help Us Remember
If you asked someone what they received for Christmas five or ten years ago, would they remember? Maybe not. But they would remember how they felt. Who was there. The way someone laughed. The sound of a familiar voice. The season of life they were in.
That’s why I believe the most thoughtful gifts aren’t things — they’re memories. We all have enough stuff. The toys, the gadgets, the things that eventually find their way to the back of a closet. What children carry with them far longer are experiences — the moments where they felt seen, loved, and fully present. Consider possibly gifting an experience. This invites someone in your life to create a memory rather than open another box. A baking day with Grandma, a special one-on-one outing, a weekend adventure, or a photo session where they get to simply be themselves — these are the gifts that linger. Years from now, they may not remember what they unwrapped, but they’ll remember how they felt and who was beside them.
As a photographer I know it may be cliche of me to say but that's why I think photos are so important. A photo freezes a moment in time we’ll never get back. The tiny hands wrapped around yours. The way your child looks at you when they feel safe and loved. These photographs become more than images — they become reminders of who we were in that season.
I have seen it over and over again: the value of a memory only grows with time. One day, these moments will be what we hold onto. If you’re searching for a meaningful gift this season, I’d love to help. I’m always happy to share recommendations for voice-recorded gifts, and I offer photo session gift certificates on my website for those wanting to preserve a season of life beautifully. Below you will find a few of my favorite ideas for Christmas gifts this season that tie into this them of capturing memories.
Merry Christmas from my family to yours!
